What's Your Flavor?

Postby BigBadBlazer » Sat Mar 19, 2005 12:45 pm

Is there any Linux users out there? If so, what is your favorite distro? I myself like Mepis & SuSe....I'm running Mepis on the machine that I'm on right now, and I have SuSe running on another. I like the " goodies " that are included in the Mepis Distro, but, after doing a " upgrade " I've had a few issues....like with the space-bar on the key board not responding unless I do a reboot, and depending what kernal I boot, sometimes the screen will freeze, then have like a " rainbow " effect, then go blank.....but that's very rare now. The only issue I've had wit SuSe is everytime I boot the machine into Linux, I have to reconfigure the sound card....it's not saving the configuration for some reason.
Other than those minor issues, I'm now a Linux addict, from XP. I no longer have spyware, adware, pop-up/unders.....and can do anything in Linux that I could with Windoze plus more....

WiFi

Postby BigBadBlazer » Sat Mar 19, 2005 12:48 pm

Does anyone know of any WiFi hotspots in the C.P. Merrillville area? (Free) I know of the Pay ones already. Was just wondering if anyone might be hosting freebies.....doubtful, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

The pop culture coffee shop 1/2 block north of the square on main street in Crown Point. Also soon the city is planning on making the whole CP downtown a wi-fi free zone soon.

suse has a nice live dvd that allows you to try it out without installing it on your computer. Nice way to test it if your not sure if your hardware is supported.

Alright but I have a laptop that I decided to wing it with and the video card wasn't supported (didn't bother to even look into that before I installed) and I get nothing on the screen. The live dvd works just like it was installed on your computer (its a bootable dvd and some offer cds) but if you want to risk it ok.

Although if you have name brand hardware you shouldn't have much of a problem.

I tried linux and didn't really get it. It didn't seem to offer anything that windows or Mac offer.

It offers plenty that winstink doesn't. Primarily money in your pocket.

I use Mepis, Fedora Core 2 ... and a few other flavors, but Mepis seems to be a pretty solid build.

I also run Win XP Pro and Win 2k Pro but that's mainly to stay current on them for tech support and for graphics ( I'm still hopeful that the software will lovingly embrace the linux platform ).
