C.P. completes land buy

CROWN POINT | It's official.

With the City Council's approval Monday, the city is ready to buy land next to City Hall that now houses the Geisen Funeral Home and a two-story building for about $905,000.

But it may take a little while before the city does anything with the property.

In the immediate future, the city will take possession of the house it now is leasing for engineering, economic development and special events offices, Economic Development Director Frank Mosko said. Larry Geisen will lease the funeral home from the city until he builds a new, 13,000-square-foot business at 606 E. 113th Ave.

The City Council also approved a special use required for construction of the funeral home at the site Monday. Geisen is scheduled to go before the Plan Commission Monday for site development plan approval of the project.

Other than the lease agreement and minor changes to the house, the city has more planning to do, including a needs assessment, before taking any other action, Mosko said.

City officials have been talking about buying the property at 109 N. East St. for years.

The most often discussed potential use is a new City Hall. But when the land came up for sale in 2002, former Mayor James Metros said there was no money in the city's budget and cited other priorities.
