INDOT supports C.P. traffic changes

CROWN POINT | City officials have gotten support from the Indiana Department of Transportation on proposals for changing parking and traffic flow in downtown Crown Point.

Economic Development Director Frank Mosko and City Engineer Bill Meeks met with INDOT officials in LaPorte recently to discuss the results of a recently completed, city-commissioned parking and traffic study.

The meeting's purpose was to get direction from the department on how to put into action some of the suggested changes and spot any red flags.

Mosko said INDOT supports new downtown signs that eventually could go up throughout the city announcing the historic district, retail district and the locations of schools and City Hall. Officials also are interested in plans to test reverse angle parking in a portion of the downtown for six months, which the study concludes could be safer.

"They want to come down and send people to do some observation," Mosko said.

As for changing Joliet and Main streets to allow two-way traffic around the square, INDOT will have to do traffic counts to see if the change is justified. But officials supported the idea of making Court Street one way north of the square for 150 feet, as the study recommends.

Realigning the entrance of U.S. 231 into the square will require a lot more study by the state and the city, though.

Before any action can be taken, the city's Redevelopment Commission needs to vote to adopt the study's ideas. That should happen shortly, Mosko said.
