C.P. growth expected to continue

CROWN POINT | The city could easily grow by 10,000 to 15,000 people in the next decade if the residential housing boom continues at its present pace, city officials said Thursday.

Speaking to the Greater Crown Point Chamber of Commerce, Building and Planning Director Curt Graves listed residential plans that will bring hundreds of new homes to the community, including V3 Realty Company's proposal to build up to 980 housing units in the next seven years.

Olthof Homes hopes to build 100 houses in Pentwater this year, and has plans for subdivisions on Marshall Street and south of Schmidt Farms. Lasco Development is looking to build 198 single-family homes east of Interstate 65, and Graves said another developer wants to annex land east of the city that could bring 300 to 500 housing units.

The pace could put the city's population in line with the Lakota Group's projection that it will reach 52,000 by 2020.

With so many houses going up, chamber members asked whether there will be enough land left for much economic development in the bedroom community.

Frank Mosko, economic development director for the city, said one reason why there has been so much residential growth is because land prices are high, in some cases $75,000 an acre for property with no utilities or roads.

With the recent negative reaction to the possibility of a Wal-Mart coming to the city, Mosko also said he's not sure what kind of reception a large distribution center would get.

But Mosko added there are a number of projects in the works, including a biomedical company that could announce plans to locate in Crown Point in the coming weeks.
