C.P. builds on housing growth record

CROWN POINT | Continuing to build on its construction records, Crown Point once again had the most single-family housing starts of any city or town in Lake County in 2005.

For the fourth year in a row, the city came in second only to unincorporated Lake County, which had 300 new, unattached single-family homes built in 2005. Crown Point had 296, while St. John reported 247 and Schererville 184.

The majority of new development in Crown Point took place in the subdivisions Ellendale Farm, Schmidt Farms, Penn Oak and Pine Hill. The average cost of the homes, not including lots, was $213,000.

Building and Planning Director Curt Graves said it's clear that developers in the region, including those in Illinois, have found Crown Point and are attracted by ample land, water and sewer availability and its school system.

"They've finally realized driving to Lake County, Indiana, you're still only 45 minutes from downtown Chicago on a good day," he said. "Everything was going northwest and west of Chicago. You're still in Illinois but you're an hour and 45 minutes from Chicago."

The city also did a total of 10,016 building inspections in 2005, which comes out to an average of 40 per day, Graves said.

With several new subdivisions already in the works, he added that he doesn't see any signs of things slowing down.
