C.P. OKs more Broadway condos

CROWN POINT | City Council members had mostly praise for a developer's request Tuesday to add condos above future businesses at the intersection of South Street and Broadway.

The council passed a resolution allowing Rich and Jo-Ann Plank the special use permit to develop up to 30 additional residential condos on the second floors of four buildings slated to house commercial businesses.

In 2004, the two got city approval to build the combination of business and residential development, including a special use for 48 condo units on the second floor of five other buildings. Rich Plank told the City Council on Tuesday he wanted to expand the number of condos because there was so much interest in the project, though some units may be used for professional space.

The condos will be a minimum of 1,150 square feet and go for $125 to $144 per square foot.

Council President Paul Bremer, R-1st, objected to the plans out of concern there could be parking problems and clashes between residents and the businesses.

"You're packing them in like sardines," Bremer said.

But other council members said they thought the proposal was appropriate for the area. Residents, they said, will be aware of the situation they're moving into.

Bob Corbin, R-5th, said the project looked like a lifestyle center, a mixed style of development that's been successful elsewhere.

Andrew Kyres, D-3rd, also spoke in support of the request.

"I appreciate the diversity of a concept like this coming to Crown Point," he said.
