C.P. sees new ways to use wireless network

CROWN POINT | While the city likely will delay taking action on creation of its wireless network today, Mayor Dan Klein has some other ideas in mind for using the technology down the road.

Klein said the Board of Works probably would not accept today any of the bids it has received. The city's needs have changed because of an offer by the Lake County Sheriff's Department for first responders from Crown Point and other municipalities to use its wireless, interoperable computer system to communicate.

Bob Wichlinski, of On-Site Computer LLC, said he planned to recommend that the Crown Point board reject bids for the second time and instead put out a request for proposals. The city can seek proposals because it's estimated that by working with the Sheriff's Department the whole project will cost less than $75,000, Wichlinski said.

Klein also announced Tuesday it's the city's intent to make its parks wireless hot spots, just like the downtown square. The technology would allow people who want to take their kids to the park to bring a laptop along, he said.

The city also is looking into using the wireless network to install video cameras around the square. The cameras, Wichlinski said, could be hooked up to distribution points. It then would be up to the city to decide who gets to see the feed, he said.

Klein said cameras could prevent the kind of vandalism the city experienced this summer, when several bulldogs on display as part of a public art exhibit were damaged.
