CP schools ready for growth

CROWN POINT | Talk of an additional 2,900 people coming to the city in the next five to seven years via a new subdivision doesn't have the Crown Point Community School Corp. worried.

Or at least no more worried than usual.

School officials are already well aware of how fast Crown Point is growing and have plans to deal with the impact on enrollment in the next three to four years, said Assistant Superintendent Rick Gadberry. Among them is a design for the expansion of Crown Point High School, completed when the school was first proposed and built.

The addition would bring two new pods, with 12 classrooms in each pod. It would hold an additional 500 to 1,000 students. The high school was built for 2,200 to 2,500 students and currently has 2,199.

Expanding the high school isn't on the school district's agenda right now, but growth is an area officials monitor "only daily," according to Gadberry.

The proposed subdivision, The Heritage, south of the Interstate 65 and U.S. 231 intersection, could bring 2,900 people to the city. Gadberry said that could translate to about 250 new students.

Overall, the Crown Point School Corp. grew by 300 students this fall, with 120 of those students in the high school, Gadberry said. The numbers are about average for the past few years, but well above annual increases 10 years ago.

Crown Point High School Principal Ryan Pitcock said although the school is near its designed capacity physically, changes can be made to better use space. Teachers haven't had to move from one room to another for different periods, and classrooms are empty for an hour each day when teachers are in their offices. Putting the rooms to use during those hours could increase the school's capacity, Gadberry said.

While the growth rate means more planning, Pitcock sees a positive side.

"This is a result of our being a school of choice," he said. "I believe it validates accomplishments with our kids."
