Van Sessen, Uran head into fall election
Klein declines comment on apparent defeat

CROWN POINT | Challenger Gayle Van Sessen knocked incumbent Mayor Dan Klein aside for the Republican mayoral nod after a volatile political battle that ended with Tuesday night's vote tally.

Democrat David Uran secured the Democratic nomination and will face Van Sessen in November, according to unofficial election results.

"I could feel it," Van Sessen said. "The last couple of days, the momentum had shifted."
The Republican mayoral race was embroiled with controversy. Lake County Republican Chairman John Curley publicly expressed disappointment Monday to Klein and Van Sessen's campaigns over what he called "slanderous allegations" against both candidates.

This was the second time that Klein and Van Sessen faced off for the Republican vote. In 2003, Klein beat Van Sessen by about 300 votes and former City Councilwoman Pam Roth by about 700.

On Tuesday, it appeared to be Van Sessen who bested Klein by more than 100 votes.

Klein had not conceded the race by press time Tuesday night. He declined to comment, saying that he was waiting for absentee ballots to be counted.

Uran overtook developer Dan Jordan and resident Karin Mason to secure the Democratic nomination in Tuesday's primary.

"I'm very excited," he said. "I was knocking on doors until 8 p.m. last night."

Jordan said he stopped by Uran's headquarters on Main Street to offer his congratulations. He said he plans to look at the whole picture before deciding where to offer his support.

Mason offered her congratulations to Uran.

Van Sessen and Uran will face off Nov. 6 for the top Crown Point office. Both candidates have experience in the city.

Van Sessen is the executive director for the Greater Crown Point Chamber of Commerce, president of the Friends of the Gary/Chicago International Airport, treasurer of the Crown Point Rotary Club and president of Leadership Northwest Indiana.

Uran is a former member of the Crown Point Board of Zoning Appeals, a licensed insurance and health agent, a former president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 176 in Crown Point and a 13-year veteran of the Crown Point Police Department.
