Five race for C.P.'s top post

CROWN POINT | Republican Gayle Van Sessen joined Crown Point's mayoral race just before Friday's noon deadline.

The 53-year-old faces off against incumbent Mayor Dan Klein for the Republican nomination in the May 8 primary. Dan Jordan, Karin Mason and David Uran are vying for the Democratic nod.

The Republican ticket is a partial rematch of 2004's heated primary. Klein beat Van Sessen by about 300 votes and former city Councilwoman Pam Roth by about 700.
"I think that it's pretty important a mayor understand how to create a team," Van Sessen said. "It's a totally different leadership style than our city has seen. ... That's how things get done."

Van Sessen is the executive director for the Greater Crown Point Chamber of Commerce, president of the Friends of the Gary/Chicago International Airport, treasurer of the Crown Point Rotary, president of Leadership Northwest Indiana and serves on the board of directors.

Klein said he wants another four years to continue the work he started. The 51-year-old said he accomplished all of the goals he set in the 2003 race but has a new to-do list.

"We have just started to deal with the growth of Crown Point and the revitalization of the downtown square," Klein said.

Democratic mayoral candidate David Uran said his experience as a Crown Point police officer, bank loan officer and former member of the Crown Point Board of Zoning Appeals would benefit the city government.

"There needs to be a compromise between residential and commercial development so they can co-exist," the 38-year-old said.

Mason has no political experience. She said her negative experiences with the past and current administrations convinced her she needed to run.

"It's time -- time the residents have an alternative to what's out there," the 51-year-old said.

If elected, Mason said she'd like to provide city residents with improved infrastructure.

Developer Dan Jordan, 77, said he has been involved in the political realm for more than 30 years.

"What I want to do is work with each department -- not try to micromanage them," he said.

Acting fire chief backs Van Sessen for mayor

CROWN POINT -- A city department head is openly supporting the candidate trying to unseat Mayor Dan Klein in the Republican primary.
Mark Baumgardner Sr., the acting fire chief, has a Gayle Van Sessen campaign sign in his front yard on North Main Street.

Van Sessen, executive director of the city's Chamber of Commerce, is challenging Klein for the Republican nomination for mayor in the May primary.

Van Sessen said Baumgardner is "absolutely" a supporter of hers. Their children grew up together and the families are friends. And Van Sessen's late father, Bob Condron, was a Crown Point firefighter for 22 years, she said.

"I've known (Baumgardner) for 18 years," Van Sessen said. "Mark and his wife are the kind of friends you go to kids' birthday parties and graduation parties with."

Baumgardner said he didn't want to comment on the campaign sign.

He has been the city's acting fire chief since former chief Mark Oster resigned in September after a spat with Klein.

Van Sessen challenged Klein in the 2003 Republican primary and lost, taking 34 percent of the vote to Klein's 43. Klein went on to win his first term.

No other Republicans are on the ballot this year.

Three people are vying for the Democratic nomination: Dave Uran, a former Crown Point police officer who is now a loan officer in the city and head coach of Hanover Central High School's boys basketball team; Dan Jordan, a Crown Point developer who was formerly involved in St. John Township politics; and Karin Mason, a resident who has a bone to pick with Crown Point officials because they won't connect city water and sewer lines to her Iowa Street property, which the city annexed in 1993.
