CROWN POINT: Growth the focus of mayor's State of the City address

CROWN POINT | Responsible growth was the focus of 2006 -- and of the future, Mayor Dan Klein said in his State of the City address Monday night.

He discussed Crown Point's booming development and population, saying it was an endorsement of what the city and residents are doing right. Crown Point's planning and building department issued 249 permits for new single-family homes last year.

"Those families would not be joining their futures with ours if they did not believe in what we are doing as a community," Klein said.
Klein said there must be a balance between the residents who say Crown Point is moving too fast and those who say it moves too slowly. He said the city needs conscious, controlled growth.

"Crown Point is not for sale," he said.

The city took strides toward that goal, launching a $3.5 million waste water project, purchasing a new firetruck, hiring more police officers, adding a new city computer network and installing a Geographic Information System, he said.

Klein asked residents to be patient as Crown Point muddles through development of the Interstate 65 and U.S. 231 corridor and 109th interchange -- and faces the challenge of keeping the current level of city services.

"Things like new firetrucks and fire stations do not happen overnight or in one year's budget cycle," he said. "The money needs to be planned out over a number of years."
