Downtown Square adds wireless access

Downtown, without the wires

CROWN POINT | Just in time for July Fourth festivities, Mayor Dan Klein announced Thursday that the square now has free, wireless Internet access.

On the steps of the old courthouse and surrounded by children, Klein said the system will enhance residents' quality of life and could promote economic development.

Klein demonstrated it also can be fun to use, showing on a laptop how visitors can quickly download from the city's Web site a map of the bulldog art project or details of the upcoming parade.

"Our hot spot is live," Klein said. "Do you feel it in the air?"

Access is confined to the downtown, but isn't available inside buildings on the square, so as not to compete with other vendors, said Bob Wichlinski, of ON-SITE Computer LLC. The service is available in City Hall.

ON-SITE installed the system in June for $6,000. Wichlinski said there will be no maintenance costs. The system has been designed to support up to 1,000 users.

Valparaiso is the only other city in the region known to have the service throughout its downtown, Wichlinski said.

The system is separate from the wireless network the Board of Public Works and Safety is considering to connect the city's different offices. The board could award a bid for the project at its next meeting.

Work is under way on a sign, picturing the old courthouse and lightning bolts, to tell people the downtown is a hot spot.

Eventually, the city plans to make sure all of its parks have wireless Internet access, too, Klein said.

Whats up with all these jobs going to ON-SITE Computer LLC. That website they made for the city sucks and now they're doing wireless access (don't get why crown point really needs that but thats not the point) Does the mayor have connections with them or are they related to someone else in the city government. Just the fact that the city keeps hiring the same company (which isn't even in crown point) doesn't make sense.
