City to consider annexation of 450 acres

CROWN POINT | A group of families filed a petition this week to have about 456 acres of farmland brought into the city.

City Councilman Bob Corbin, R-5th, Diane Corbin Davis, Sally Ann Davis, Alex Magiera, Ila Magiera, Robert Bock, Henry Bock and Marianne Roushelange own the properties, which stretch from 129th Avenue, south of where Interstate 65 and U.S. 231 intersect, to 137th Avenue. Also included is a tract just west of I-65 and south of 129th Avenue.

Clerk-Treasurer Patti Olson said a City Council meeting has been tentatively scheduled for April 14 to begin consideration of the petition.

On Wednesday, Mayor Dan Klein said he didn't know what was coming in or how the land might be developed. But according to the petition, filed Tuesday and Wednesday, the property owners are requesting the land be annexed with a single-family residential zoning classification.

The properties have been held by the families for about 50 years each and are in the Crown Point school district and Lake Michigan watershed, Corbin said. In his case, Corbin and his sister have equally owned 95 acres of farmland, which they inherited from their parents.

"As they develop we want them to be planned through the city of Crown Point," Corbin said of the properties.

On Thursday, Corbin also filed a disclosure of interest statement, recusing himself from consideration of and from voting on the petition for annexation.

The petition comes as the City Council prepares for a final vote Monday night on the annexation of Liberty Park and a petition by Hawk Development Corp. to annex 40 acres west of Clark Road, next to the White Hawk subdivision.
