Don't even think about drinking and driving anywhere near Crown Point this holiday season.

Police Chief Keith Hefner and Crown Point City Judge Kent Jeffirs aren't planning to show any leniency just because it's the season of good will.

In fact, the chief warned, you'll have a better chance of getting caught. And, if you get caught, you'll have a better chance of staying in jail -- unless Santa left you a pile of cash under the tree.

Today through Jan. 2, people will have to come up with $2,000 cash for all operating a vehicle while intoxicated offenses and all marijuana possession charges. That's double the usual bond amount.

Crown Point also will put additional officers on the street to be on the lookout for drunk drivers.

Hefner said he approached Jeffirs about the idea after he heard about other judges doing it. Jeffirs readily agreed.

"It is important that our residents are able to feel safe while traveling our roadways during the holidays," Hefner said in a news release. "Hopefully, this will send a message to people to celebrate the season responsibly, and if you are going to drink, don't drive."

He said he wishes every holiday could go without drunk driving arrests.

"We don't want to keep them from having a good time, we just want to keep them from hurting somebody," he said.

Now you can't say you haven't been warned, tell all you little friends.
